H 5061—Increase Fines on Industrial Polluters
This legislation
would increase the daily fines and increase the scope of liability
of the Industrial Property remediation and Reuse Act. The daily fines
for polluters who do not remediate pollution that they cause would
increase from $1000/day to a maximum of $25,000/day. The RI Dept
of Environmental Management would assess the penalties. The intent
of this bill is to force polluters to clean up their mess and thus
avoid exposing our residents to potential toxins.
H5200—Veterans’ Memorial Sakonnet River Bridge
Rename the Sakonnet
River Bridge the Veterans Memorial Sakonnet River Bridge to honor
all the men and women who have been killed in action from the towns
of Tiverton and Portsmouth.
H5219—Sex Offender Registration
This bill would close the
loophole that allows sex offenders to be free from registering with
local police departments while they are appealing their classification.
H5284—Green Building Bill
This legislation would require
all future publicly-funded projects that are in excess of $250,000.00
be constructed in compliance with the USGBC LEED for New Construction
standards to meet the minimum LEED certification. This will not add
costs to construction and will potentially save the State or city/town
money in operating costs.
H5464—Reduce Sales Tax
This bill would reduce the current state
sales tax from 7% to 4% and only broaden the items taxed to match
the items taxed in Massachusetts. With our neighbors looking to increase
their sales taxes, this would make Rhode Island much more attractive
for shopping and more competitive in the region. Sales taxes are
one of the most regressive forms of taxation and hurt the least
amongst us the most.
H5576—Post Foreclosure Eviction of Tenants
This legislation would
prevent the eviction of tenants who are current with their rent and
in compliance with the agreement when a property is foreclosed on.
Due to the increased number of foreclosures presently, a large number
of families are being forced out onto the streets through no fault
of their own.
